Our Crafting Day

29.04.2015 - 13:04

Hard to believe it was sunny last week.  We spent a morning sharing simple crafting techniques with our volunteers.

The volunteers will be able to take these fun activities to the families they visit in Edinburgh and Midlothian.

Today we distributed wonderful garden kits to our volunteers.  They will take them to the families they visit to get them engaged in their gardens and local parks.  We know the three year olds are going to love their Grow Wild kits -  packets of wild flower seeds, plant markers and best of all a Bee House!

The lovely kits were free from Grow Wild  which inspires communities, friends, neighbours and individuals to transform local spaces by sowing, growing and enjoying native wild flowers.

We just can't wait to see what comes up!

Silver COSLA Award for Big Bed Time Read

02.04.2015 - 13:16

We're very proud to share a Silver COSLA award for our work on the Big Bed Time Read along with Midlothian's Early Years Collaborative, Midlothian Teachers and the mums and children who made it happen.

An innovative project to encourage Midlothian parents to read bedtime stories to their children has won a silver award in a national celebration of public sector excellence.

The Big Bedtime Read won the accolade in the Tackling Inequalities and Improving Health category of the COSLA Excellence Awards.

The winners were announced at a special ceremony in Crieff on 12 March.

Councillor Bob Constable, the cabinet member for education in Midlothian, said: “The Big Bedtime Read is a truly inspiring scheme and its win is well-deserved. For example, in just one of our schools taking part, parents have read 150 books to their children in the past year.

“Results include improved children’s speech and language, established bedtime routines, better concentration and behaviour and improved attachment and bonding between parent and child.

“Parents have also reported improvements in their own reading, confidence, wellbeing and self-esteem as they witness how their actions are making a positive difference for their child and for themselves.”
